LIU YOUMEI

On February 16, 1938, Liu Youmei was born in Shangrao, Jiangxi Province and graduated from Shanghai Jiaotong University in 1961. In 1999 he was elected the academician of China Engineering Academy. As a professorleveled senior engineer and an expert of “Railway Electric Traction Power,” he is the chief director of High Speed Research Institute of CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co, Ltd, chairman of CSR Technological Expert Committee, and one of the founders & pioneers of Chinese electric locomotive development.
As the chief designer, he presides and realizes the threetime significant technical improvement and final design of the first series of domestic electric locomotive. Later, he presides over the research & development and application of the second series and the third series subsequently. He won the Second Prize of National Sci.& Tech. Progress in 1985, the First Prize of National Sci.&Tech. Progress in 1989, the Top Grade Prize of Sci.&Tech. Progress of MoR in 1997, and the Second Prize of National Sci.&Tech. Progress in 1998.
He also bears the task of creating the fourth series of electric locomotive, which successfully breaks zerorecord of AC drive techniques in Chinese railways, thus makes Chinese electric traction power achieve four times historical breakthrough, i.e. from normal load to heavy load, from normal speed to high speed, from DC drive to AC drive and from import to export.
In 2002, the successfully developed high speed electric multiple unit —“China Star” up to a maximum running speed of 270km/h became the first domestic high speed train with totally selfowned intellectual property and realized the core technology from systematic integration to key parts. “China Star” endured strict test and running examination, and created the highest speed record of Chinese railways of 321.5km/h on highspeed running test line, which symbolizes the entry of Chinese high speed train into hitech field. He wins the following honors successively: “National Midaged and Young Expert with Outstanding Contribution,” “Zhan Tianyou Sci.&Tech. Achievement Prize,” “Guang Zhao Sci.&Tech. Achievement Prize,” “Zhan Tianyou Sci.&Tech. Grand Prize,” “Guang Hua Engineering Sci.&Tech. Prize,” and “National Model Worker.”
