LIU YINGJIAN

Mr. Liu Yingjian is a researcher of Chinese Academy of Sciences, director of Character Recognition Engineering Centerthe National leading pattern recognition laboratory, and the president of Hanwang Technology Co, Ltd.He was born in Nanjing City,Jiangsu Province on 22nd February,1953.He achieved his bachelor degree majored in computer science from Nanjing Communication Engineering College in Dec 1982.
Mr. Liu Yingjian has been involved in R&D of character recognition for years. He has gained the leading position internationally in the field of online handwriting recognition, offline handwriting recognition as well as printed Chinese handwriting recognition. In 1985, he developed the first “Online Handwriting Character Recognition System” in the world, and obtained the state patent. From 1996, he has taken the lead to accomplish several projects, including the 863 Plan and the Natural Science Fund. Mr. Liu Yingjian continued improving the online Chinese cursive handwriting methodology and has basically solved the problem of regular and cursive script recognition. In 1999, the specialist group from Chinese Academy of Science appraised that the whole performance index of Hanwang Online Chinese Handwriting Cursive Character Recognition Methodology and System reached the top level internationally.
And this program obtained the First Prize from Beijing Municipal Science & Technology Progress Award in 2000, the Significant Technical Invention Award from Ministry of Information Industry in 2001, and the First Prize for National Science & Technology Progress Award in 2001. For years, the research on offline assigner and nonassigner that directed by him has been the top position of the 863 National Plan Research.
In 1999, Hanwang merged the OCR R&D Department of National Intelligence Center. Thus, Hanwang has established the best OCR R&D team and owned the leading Chinese OCR technology in the world. As the specialist of this field, Mr. Liu Yingjian participated in setting the national standard of “Test Method of Printed Chinese Character System ”in 2000, and “Test Regulations of Online Handwriting Recognition Technology ”in 2002.
