ZHU HESUN

Zhu Hesun, an expert in chemical engineering and materials and professor of chemical engineering, was born in January 1930 in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. He graduated from the Department of Chemical Engineering, Soochow University in 1951, and completed his postgraduate study at the Research Institute of Chemical Engineering, Zhejiang University in 1953. He first taught at South China Institute of Technology, which was renamed later as South China University of Technology. Since 1955, he has been working at Beijing Institute of Technology, and for many years he was president of Beijing Institute of Technology, dean of its Graduate School and director of the Research Center for Materials Science of BIT.
For more than 20 years, Prof. Zhu has been engaged in research, mainly in the following two areas: preparation and application of functional materials, and science and technology for preparation of biomaterials.
Paying special attention to the research in biological materials at the cell level, he has developed silk fibroin into a fine base material for biomaterial uses. In the research of surface modification by physical, chemical and biological means, he brought forward and established the material of integrating gene to the surface of silk fibrion, which shows the designed function; by charging the material surface with high potential or covalently bonding the functional group, cells are activated and the biocompatibility of the material is improved. Important results and progress have also been made in the research of photoinduced cytotoxic activity against cell membrane of organophosphrous compound of fullerene.
The successfully developed Qswitch membrane with photoelectric functions has provided a key component for the miniaturization of lasers. It has been applied to some equipment and hence been awarded the 1985 State Prize for Science and Technology Progress. He also engaged in extensive research in allcarbon and carbonbased materials, and established the chemical method for preparing wide bandgap materials in solution, achieving a major progress in preparation and devices of wide bandgap materials used in cold cathode field emission.
Prof. Zhu was member of Appraisal Group of the State Councils Academic Degree Committee, member of Appraisal Group of the Chemistry Department, National Science Foundation, vice president of Chinese Materials Research Society, vice president of Chinese Association for Industrial Design, as well as vice chairman of Chinese  Committee of Biological Materials.  Currently, he is consulting expert of “973 Program”of the National Basic Research Program of China, member of the Expert Group of NSF Major Research Plan, member of the Engineering and Technological Committee of the National Engineering and Research Center for Biomaterials, editorial board member of Progress in Natural Science, etc.
Prof. Zhu and his research group have published over 200 papers in academic journals both abroad and in China, and obtained more than 10 patents. In 1990, he was awarded the title of National Advanced Worker of Science and Technology in Institution of Higher Education; in 1999 he received the Material Science Contribution Prize from Chinese  Materials Research Society; In 2003, he was awarded the honorary title of International Fellow of Biomaterial Science and Engineering.
