AWARDEE OF CHEMISTRY PRIZE

GAO HONG

Dr. Gao Hong(Hung Kao), born in 1918, received his B.S. in chemistry from National Central University of China in 1943, and Ph.D. in chemistry from University of Illinois at Champaign Urbana of USA in 1947. He was a professor and life-time professor at the chemistry department of Nanjing University during 1948-1992. He was elected the academician of the Chemistry Division of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1980 and a member of the Standing Committee of the Chemistry Division of Chinese Academy of Sciences during 1980-1992. Since 1992 he has been a life-time professor at Northwest University, Xi'an, Shaanxi Province.
Dr. Gao is one of the leading experts in analytical chemistry and a highly-respected educator in China. He took part in planning the program for fundamental subject in scientific development strategy of China in 1962 and 1977 respectively. He was a member of the Advisory Committee of Sciences to the State for the first and second terms, a member of the Chemistry Division of the National Natural Sciences Foundation, the group leader of the Analytical Chemistry Group for the first, second and third terms, a member of the Award Committee of the Chinese National Sciences, a member of the Chemistry Division of the Chinese National Science and Technology Committee, a board member of the Chinese Chemical Society (CCS), and the vice-president of the Analytical Chemistry Division of CCS. He has also served as a member of the Electroanalytical Committee of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), a member of the advisory committee of the journal of Trends in Analytical Chemistry, a member of the editorial committee or deputy editor of such journals as Chinese Journal of Analytical Chemistry and Chemical Journal of Chinese Universities. Currently, he is a senior member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, member of the Advisory Committee to Shaanxi Province, director of the Key Laboratory of Electroanlaytical Chemistry in Shaanxi Province, chairman of the Degree Authorization Committee at Northwest University, and honorary-director of the Institute of Analytical Sciences at Northwest University.
Dr. Gao has devoted his life to the research in the area of electroanalytical chemistry, especially made his great contribution towards the advancement of the theory and application of polarographic methods in electroanalytical chemistry including developing 19 new equations to characterize the kinetics of electrode processes. He systematically explored and developed the methodology of oscillographic analysis, which is now established as a new class of analytical method for novel, quantitative applications due to his research work.
Dr. Gao wrote the first textbook entitled “Instrumental Analysis" in China in 1956. This book was so widely utilized in universities over generations and made a great impact in this field. He has published more than 300 research papers in the field of electroanalytical chemistry and 4 monographs including “Theory of Polarographic Current", “Oscillopolarographic Titration", “Oscillographic Titration" and “Oscillographic Pharmaceutical Analysis". His research accomplishments were highly recognized and he received numerous distinguished awards national wise in his career. His two books entitled “Instrumental Analysis (3rd edition)" and “Theory of Polarographic Current" received the 1st place Award of the Excellent Books from the National Publications in 1988 and 1992 respectively. The monograph entitled “Oscillographic Titration" received the Special Award (highest) of the Excellent Academic Publications from Universities. His research work “Fundamental investigations on modern polarographic analysis" received the Award of the 1st National Science Conference in 1978, and the 3rd  Award of the National Natural Sciences in 1982. His research work “Oscillographic titration" received the 2nd  Award of the National Sciences and Technologies in 1986 and the 3rd Award of the National Natural Sciences in 1991.
