AWARDEE OF TECHNOLOGICAL SCIENCES  PRIZE

ZHU JING

ZHU Jing (1938.10.10 -), born in Shanghai, graduated in Department of Physics, Fudan University, in 1962, professor in Department of Material Science and Engineering and the dean of school of Material Science and Engineering, Tsinghua University, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the member of the presidium of Chinese Academy of Sciences. From 1962 to 1996 she worked in Central Iron and Steel Research Institute. Meantime, in 1980.8 National Ministry of Education and Ministry of Metallurgy sent her to Arizona State University (ASU) of U.S. for an advanced study under the guidance of Prof. J.M.Cowley, the great scientist in diffraction physics. From 1980 to 1982 she was recommended as a faculty research associate in Center For Solid State Science of ASU, and from 1984 to 1985 she was invited as a faculty visiting associate professor in Department of Physics and Astronomy of ASU.
Prof. Zhu is one of the pioneers in analytical electron microscopy field in China. She has been engaging in developing electron microscopy for characterization of crystal structure, deformation structure and electron structure and doing applied fundamental research in metals, alloys, functional ceramics, nanomaterials and device.
From the late 1960s to late 1980s, Prof. Zhu and her colleagues investigated alloying principle and the toughening method in maraging steel, based on their research, a rational heat treatment system and alloying way, that are adopted in the engineering applications, were suggested.
The coherent electron wave micro diffraction effect of an individual planar fault was found and defined for the first time in the world by her observation using the cold field emission gun scanning transmission electron microscope and analysis with diffraction theory in 1982. The original publications have been widely cited.
Prof. Zhu received 9 awards, including the National Nature Science Prize; the National Science and Technology Progress Prize; the Science and Technology Progress Prizes by Metallurgical Industry Ministry, Chinese Academy of Sciences and National Education Committee, respectively. She has published over 170 articles in academic journals and 4 monographs.
