Zheng Shouren

AWARDEE OF TECHNOLOGICAL SCIENCES PRIZE

ZHENG SHOUREN

Zheng Shouren, an expert in design of water resources and hydropower projects, was born in Yingshang County of Anhui Province in January 1940, and graduated from Hehai University(formerly called Institute of Water Conservancy of East China) in 1963. As a senior engineer of professor rank and the chief engineer of the Changjiang Water Resources Commission of MWR, he successively participated in the designs of Lushui Hydropower Project of Hubei Province, Wujiangdu Hydropower Project of Guizhou Province and Changjiang Gezhouba Hydropower project, and took responsibilities for diversion design of the Wujiangdu as well as river closure design and cofferdam design of the Gezhouba. He joined and took charge of the designs of Qingjiang Geheyan Hydropower Project and Three Gorges Project(TGP), respectively, In 1997, he was elected the academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE).
In the river closure design for Gezhouba Project, Mr. Zheng Shouren put forward the solution called rock barriers formed by rock cages with steel frames, which made the closure completed smoothly and had been applied in the open channel closure of TGP. In the design of Geheyan Project, working and living in the damsite for a long time, he took responsibilities for settling the key technical issues happened in construction and design of the project, and created favorable conditions for its construction quality improvement, impoundment and power generation ahead of time. He brought forth new ideas in the design process of TGPs river closure, cofferdams, dam body, powerhouses and shiplock. In addition, staying in the field all the way, he organized to study and tackle a lot of key technical problems such as river closure of Yangtze River which is the largest one in the world up to now in closure discharge and water depth, sand silting layer and boulder layer foundation treatment of earth and rock cofferdam, foundation treatment of dam and powerhouses, flood discharge and energy dissipation, high slope stability of shiplock and hydraulics of water conveyance system of shiplock, which provided technical assurance for achieving TGPs goal of impounding(at El.135m), navigating, and power generating in 2003.
Among the projects that Mr. Zheng Shouren participated in and took charge of, he was rewarded 10 prizes at various levels; 3 items of the“National Science and Technology Progress Award”, 2 items of the “National Optimal Project Design Award” and 5 items of provincial or ministerial science and technology progress awards. Over the years, he had completed and published more than 30 theses and 2 technical monographs.
