YAN CHENGZHONG

Prof. Yan Chengzhong, an expert in aeroengine, was born in Jinan, Shandong Province, in July 1939. He graduated from Nanjing University of Aeronautics & Astronautics in 1961. From 1980 to 1982 , he was a visiting scholar at Cranfield Institute of Technology, Bedford, England. Since 1961, he has been working at Shenyang Aeroengine Research Institute (SAeRI) and has successively held the posts as the engineer, senior engineer, research fellow, deputy chief designer, deputy director, chief designer, type chief designer of SAeRI. He is a member of Power Council of Chinese Society of Aeronautics and Astronautics, president of Liaoning Engineering Thermophysics Society, honor professor of Nanjing University of Aeronautics & Astronautics. He was a deputy chief editor of Journal of Aerospace Power , chief editor of Aeroengine (quarterly).
He has been engaged in R & D of turbofan and turbojet engine for the past more than forty years. He was appointed as the chief designer of the“Kunlun”aeroengine, in charge of the design and development of the “Kunlun”, which is the first type of aeroengine designed by Chinese alone and the qualification is approved by authority in China. The major performance parameters of“Kunlun”have achieved domestic leading level and international advanced level as compared with the same kind of aeroengines. It enables China to become the fifth country after US, Russian, UK and France, whose engineers can independently design aeroengine on ones own for supersonic aircraft. He was successfully in charge of design and development of QD128, which is the first type of industrial gas turbine with Chinese intellectual property. The QD128 gas turbine has been applied to generating station at Zhongyuan oil field in Henan Province. He was also responsible for the research of swept fan with high Mach number, high stage load and high efficiency. The test results have achieved whole design targets. This marked that Chinese research level for supersonic fan with single and dual stages get into international advanced ranks. His research results for“Digital Simulation of Steadystate or Transient Performance of Arbitrary Gas Turbine Engines with Arbitrary Control Systems”was looked upon as representative of Turbine Engines Simulation capability in the early 1980s by expert of AEDC in US, and has been extensively used at home and abroad. Prof. Yan has made significant contributions to R & D of Chinese aeroengines. He was awarded four prizes of national defense science & tech., five prizes of ministry science & tech. progress.
