AWARDEE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES AND MATERIA MEDICA PRIZE

GUO JIAQIANG

Guo Jiaqiang, a specialist of high prestige in cardiovascular surgery, born on December 18, 1923，in Hebei Province, graduated in 1951 from Medical College of Surgeon, director, professor, and president(1982-1992) of Fu Wai Hospital under Beijing Union Medical University, China Academy of Medicine, also president of Chinese Cardiovascular Technical Cooperation & Training Center (1982-2003).Now he is the honorable president of the Foreign Cooperation Center of Fu Wai Cardiovascular Hospital.
His main achievements are:
1. He is one of the main originators of cardiovascular surgery in China. He has successfully performed and carried out for the first time in China many treatments and technology applications, e.g. coronary artery bypass operation (1974), Bntype Bovine pericardium bio-value (1976), open heart congenital cardiac surgery for infants (1977&1988)and neonates (1988), as well as 7 kinds of operations for congenital cardiac diseases, 3 kinds of operation for coronary heart diseaes, 2 kinds of heart valve treatment, and the GK type michanic value developed and produced in China. He has obtained 10 awards from the Ministry of Health and the State, 5 of them are important science & technology achievement awards.
2. He has promoted and disseminated cardiovascular surgical technology and scientific study results nationwide. The Chinese Cardiovascular Technical Cooperation & Training Center organized by him has extended coordinated work with more than 100 hospitals located in 27 provinces (cities, autonomy regions) which are areas lacking in both doctors and medicine.The Center helped them to resume and improve their cardiac surgical work that had been stopped or weakened as the result of “cultural revolution.”Because of these efforts, those local cardiovascular patients for a long time suffering from “hard to be treated”can then be treated in their local areas. He was thus honored by the Ministry of Health (1991) and obtained a second class Nations Science & Technology Award (1992).
3. He is a diligent, dedicated specialist and leader, having advised 12 doctoral and 14 master degree students, some of them are already outstanding elites in the new era.Led by him, Fu Wai Hospital’s work and fame has been elevated to a more advanced, highly qualified level, and a sound foundation for further persistent development has been laid since then.
