AWARDEE OF CHEMISTRY PRIZE

YOU XIAOZENG

You Xiaozeng,an inorganic chemist, was born in 1934 in Jian City of Jiangxi Province in China. He received his B.S. degree in chemistry from Wuhan University in 1955 and pursued his M.S. degree from Nanjing University in 1957. He is currently a professor at Nanjing University. Prof. You has been a visiting scholar at University of Wisconsin, Illinois (Champaign-Urbana) and Florida in U.S.A. (1980 - 1982) and was a guest professor in University of Alcala (Spain), Hong Kong University, National University of Singapore and Taiwan University from 1989 to 2001. He was elected the academician of Chinese Academy of Science in 1991.
Presently, Prof. You is the honorary director of Coordination Chemistry Institute and  the chairman of the Academic Committee of the State Key Laboratory of Coordination Chemistry of Nanjing University. He is a member of the Academic Degree-Reviewing Committee of the State Council, an international editor of Comments on Inorganic Chemistry, and an editorinchief of Chinese J. of Inorg. Chem. He was assigned the Director of Inorganic Committee of Chinese Chemistry Society, member of the Evaluation Committee of the National Science Award, member of the Evaluate Committee of the NSFC, member of the international editor of J.Chem.Soc., Dalton Trans., Inorg. Chem. Commun., and the secretary of 25th International Conference on Coordination Chemistry .
For the past half century, Prof. You devoted his life to the field of Inorganic education and research. He wrote four books entitled The Structure and Properties of Coordination Compounds, Molecular Based-Material-Opto-Electronics Functional Compounds, etc. He also translated 3 chemistry textbooks from English to Chinese. He has supervised around 80 M.S., Ph.D. graduates and post Ph.D., many of them are very active in China and abroad. He engaged in establishing the Institute of Coordination Chemistry and the State Key Laboratory of Coordination Chemistry in Nanjing University, which is a unique laboratory of its kind in China.
In the early years, Prof. You was involved in the fundamental research of the inorganic chemistry, especially the synthesis, structure, bonding and properties of coordination compounds, aiming at the elucidation of the structure- properties relationship. He has made major contributions towards the synthesis and crystal structures of novel coordination compounds, the study on the parameters of physical chemistry of complexes in solution by spectroscopic methods, and the bonding and spectroscopic calculations for coordination compounds.
More recently, Prof. You has focused on the field of Opto-electronic Functional Coordination Compounds, a concept proposed by him in China in early 1986. He aimed at molecular designing and engineering in relationship to material science and life science by supramolecular interaction. His main achievements include the molecular assembly of coordination architecture with multi-dimensional porousity, such as molecular-based zeolite-like and chiral seperation hostguest solids; studies on the opto-electronic functionality for the charge transfer system, such as its molecular-based conductors, nonlinear optics, solid light emitting and magnetic materials.
Prof. You has published more than 400 SCI articles in prestigious journals, which have been referenced in journals over 1000 times by others. He was honored with numerous awards such as the First Class Science and Technology Awards of the State Education Commission in 1990 and 2003, the Third Class Award National Natural Science Award in 1991 and the Second Class in 2004, and the award of the Federation of Asian Chem. Soc. for Fundamental Research (1995).
