LIN QUN

Lin Qun is a computational mathematician. He was born in Fujian Province in July 1935. He graduated from Amoy University in 1956. Since then he has been worked in Academy of Mathematics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).1993—Member of CAS, 1999—Member of TWAS.
Representative works:
Working on numerical differential equations. In order to achieve a high performance algorithm for the solution computation, the ideal approach is to find the error expansion for the finite element method (FEM). Lin Qun, et. al., however, overthrew such an expansion and put it right. His work was called “pioneering work”in this topic, “first paper”in this aspect, one of “the three most promising and up to date techniques originate from or received in the nineties.” Besides, for the eigenvalue computation, Lin Qun, et. al. found out the lower and upper bounds from several nonconforming and conforming FEMs, gave the a posteriori error estimate and proved the higher order accuracy of extrapolation.
Lin Qun received the First Prize for Natural Sciences of CAS(1989), the Bolzano Honorary Medal for Merit in the Mathematical Sciences from Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (2001).
