Abstract

Bao Zheng, a famous expert on Radar Signal Processing, professor of Xidian University, was born in Nantong, Jiangsu Province in 1927. He graduated from the PLA Telecommunications Engineering Institute of China(the predecessor of Xidian University) in 1953, and after graduation, he remained there as a faculty member until now. He successively held the positions of chairman of EE Department, vice-president in 1980-1982 and president in 1984-1992 of Xidian University. He became a doctoral advisor in 1983 and was elected the member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1991. He is currently chairman of the Academic Committee of Xidian University.
Prof. Bao has long been engaged in research and teaching in the fields of Radar System and Signal Processing, and made great achievements. In 1961, he directed  and successfully developed the first microwave meteorological radar in China. In 1971, he invented the “ Impulse flashing" method to locate the failure point  of underground power cables. Since 1972, he led a research  group and successfully designed the Digital Moving Target Indicator in 1976. Afterwards he headed the development of the Moving Target Detector (MTD) (1982), programmable MTD (1983), and the Radar Antenna Adaptive Sidelobe Canceller(1982). Since the end of the 1980's, Prof. Bao has contributed to the research on Space-Time Adaptive Processing (STAP), and laid a solid foundation for the development of this field in China. In recent ten years, he has been engaged in the study of Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR) imaging, and proposed many valuable concepts and methods, such as the creative concepts “Range-Instantaneous Doppler Imaging", which have been proved through real data and adopted by many researchers. In the mean time, he has brought forward a series of systematical concepts and methods about the theories and applications of the Space Super-Resolution for Coherent Signals. Besides the wide range of research fields on Radar Signal Processing, Prof. Bao also pays much attention to the introduction of newly emerging technologies, such as Time-Frequency Analysis, High-Order Statistics, into Radar Signal Processing, and has obtained some satisfactory results.
Prof. Bao is both a noted researcher and teacher. He has authored or co-authored 6 books and published over 300 papers, and has completed the training of 44 doctoral students. The awards granted to him include the Award of National Congress, the Second and Third National Science and Technology Progress Award, six First Science and Technology Progress Awards from the Ministry of Electronics Industry, the Special Award of Guang-hua Science Foundation. In 1984, he obtained the National Award for Outstanding Contributions and in 1988, he was the recipient of the May 1 Labor Medal.
