AWARDEE OF PHYSICS PRIZE

SHEN WENQING

Shen Wenqing, experimental physician. Born in Shanghai,in Aug.1945. Graduated from Tsinghua University, Department of Engineering Physics, in 1967,and then worked in Lanzhou Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Science, and was vice director of Institute of Modern Physics in period from 1985 to 1990. He moved to Shanghai Institute of Nuclear Research,Chinese Academy of Science in 1990 and was vice-director of this Institute between 1997 to 2001. Research professor of Shanghai Institute of Nuclear Research, Chinese Academy of Science, now. He is director of Shanghai Branch of Chinese Academy of Science and was elected as president of Shanghai Science and Technology Association between 2001-2006. He was elected as president of Chinese Nuclear Physics Society between 2000-2005.
Chief Scientist for Major State Basic Research Development Program under contract Number G2000744 titled as “Radioactive Ion Beam Physics and Nuclear Astrophysics” in period from 2001 to 2005.
In the research of particle emission from the reaction produced by 73 meV and below 12C on 209Bi Shen together with collaborators in Institute of Modern Physics of Chinese Academy of Science proved the alpha particle emission from massive transfer in low energy nuclear reaction. They showed in the experiments that in light reaction system there is also deep inelastic scattering and proved the existence of new reaction mechanism of incomplete deep inelastic scattering. He organized the construction of the experimental area of Heavy I on Accelerator in Lanzhou (HIRFL) and first batch of the experiments on this machine. In the 1980s, he succeeded in measurement of the mass relaxation time in quasi fission reaction and the characteristics of quasi fission reaction and pointed out the influence of such reaction on the synthesis of super heavy nuclides. He obtained good mass and charge resolution on magnet spectrometer at that time via software correction and proved the existence of five new nuclides in Gesellschaft fur Schwerionenforschung (GSI) at Germany. Moved to Shanghai Institute of nuclear Research, Chinese Academy of Science in 1990s, he together with his students suggested the formulas for calculation of the total reaction cross section, which can be used in low and intermediate energy, developed new method for calculation of total reaction cross section based on BUU equation and pointed out possible reason of the enhancement of diffusion in the neutron distribution for light neutron rich nuclei. They extracted the Equation of State and nucleon-nucleon interaction cross section for light reaction system at intermediate energy.
He was elected the academician of the Chinese Academy of Science in 1999.
