YE PEIDA

Professor Ye was born in Shanghai, China in October 1915, graduated from PeiYang University, Tianjin, China in 1938 and studied in Columbia University, New York, U.S.A. during 1945-1946. From 1947 to 1949 he was an engineer in former Central Broadcasting Station and associate professor of Jinling University in Nanjing. Since 1949, he was professor of Pei-Yang University and then professor and chairman of telecommunication department of Tianjin University. From 1955, he became professor, vice president and president of Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT). Now he is professor and honorary president of BUPT.
Professor Ye was elected the academician  of Chinese Academy of sciences In 1980, now the senior academician. In 1988, he was elected the a fellow of IEEE. In 1990, he was invited as a member of THE ELECTROMAGNETIC ACADEMY OF MIT, U.S.A. In 1993, He was elected the Governor of International Council for Computer Communications (ICCC). In 1997, he was elected  Outstanding Fellow of IEEE. In 2000, he was awarded the Third Millennium Medal of IEEE for outstanding achievements and contributions. In the same year he achieved the status of Life Fellow of IEEE. In 1999, he won a Top Prize and a Second Prize and 3 Third Prizes of Science and Technology Advancement by the Ministry of Information Industry for his research.In 2001, he won the Outstanding Contribution Prize awarded by China Institute of Electronics, China Institute of Communications and Chinese Optical Society.
Professor Ye has taught the course of electromagnetic theory, theory of guided waves, microwave theory and techniques, microwave solid state devices, theory of dielectric optical waveguide and fiber, etc., both in undergraduate and graduate levels. His former R&D fields include acoustics, radio broadcast transmitter, metallic circular waveguide H01 transmission, analogue and digital microwave relay systems, atmospheric optical communication, etc.. He has worked on coherent optical fiber communication, especially on single frequency laser, optical fiber homodyne receivers and fiber nonlinearities. What's more, he has acquired many achievements on Optical Soliton Communication System. In recent years, he has been working on OTDM and Optical Packet Switching networks.
Professor Ye has published 3 books on theory of electromagnetism and microwave techniques and 2 books on theory of dielectric waveguide and fiber. In recent years, he had published more than 400 papers, covering the above field independently or cooperating with master and Ph.D. students in various transactions and international conferences.
Professor Ye was a national member of Chinese People's Political Consulting Conference (CPPCC) from 1965 to 1993.
Professor Ye was chief scientist of Informationization Office of the State Council from 1997 to 2001.
