LU ZHITAO

Abstract

Lu Zhitao, a specialist in Structural Engineering, was born on November 4,1937, in Xinchang County, Zhejiang Province. He completed undergraduate study in Nanjing Institute of Technology in 1961 and he was admitted to the same school as a graduate student of Structural Engineering. In June 1965, he finished his graduate studies and worked as a teacher in the university. In June 1986, he was nominated as doctor's instructor by Academic Committee of Chinese State Council. In November 1997, he was selected Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering. Currently, he is the Director of the Research Institute of Prestressing Engineering and chairman of Academic Commission of Southeast University.
For the past forty years, Prof. Lu has been devoting himself to China for the development of science and technology of concrete and prestressed concrete structures, and has already made outstanding contribution and progress in the field. He perfected the scientific theory and calculating methods of concrete structure. He was the first over the world to present the theory of the two kinds of diagonal cracks in reinforced concrete beams, and he also established advanced calculating methods for shear resistance in prestressed members with flexure and RC members with eccentric compression or tension and the prestressing loss in anchorage of prestressed bars with the shape of curved or broken lines. He enlarged the scope to the systems of prestressed concrete structure and advanced the existing calculating theory and design approach. He even settled the very cruxes in seismic design, crack controlling, and calculating methods for statically indeterminate structures. He extended the prestressing technology to the new fields as prestressed steel structure and strengthening for outdated buildings. He undertook the work of design and research for many significant constructions, such as Beijing West Railway Station, Nanjing TV Tower, and Zhuhai Gongbei Customs' Building, etc.
Prof. Lu has authored over 130 research and technical papers and 7 books of monograph. He has totally won 19 Sciencd and Technology Progress prizes from State, Ministry or Jiangsu Province. He has instructed 37 doctoral students and 55 master students and he was awarded as Honorary Professor or Concurrent Professor by over 10 universities. He has won the titles of Chinese Youth & Middle-aged Specialist with Outstanding Contribution and Chinese Excellent Teacher with honor.
