AWARDEE OF TECHNOLOGICAL SCIENCES PRIZE

JIN JIANMING

Mr. Jin Jianming, an ecologist and environmental scientist, was born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province on January 23, 1932. He graduated from the Biology Department of Fudan University in Shanghai in 1955 and later received his associate doctor degree in biology from the graduate school of Leningrad University in former Soviet Union. After graduation in 1960 he worked as associate research fellow at the Botanical Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences. Mr. Jin participated the founding and structuring of the former National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA) in 1973, served as general engineer and deputy general director of NEPA and now is the consultant to Minister of State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA) and vice chairman of Science and Technology Committee of SEPA. Being academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering as well as Ph.D. Professor, Mr. Jin is also vice chairman of State Man and Biosphere Committee, executive vice-chairman of China Biodiversity Protection Foundation and vice director of China Ecological Economics Association.
Mr. Jin was engaged in research on Chinese vegetation resources and ecological/botanical community during 1960-1970.  From 1970s to 1980s, one of his most important contributions is that he is one of earliest scholars who defined environmental science, and contributed his definition in his early works entitled Environmental Protection and Discussions on Environmental Science. In the two books, specific research targets, tasks and contents with regard to environmental science were given some further discussions.
During 1980s, he was the pioneer in advocating and promoting the experiment and research on ecological agriculture, and helped establish the nation's first experiment center on eco-agriculture in Liu Mingying located in Beijing. This model successfully solved the problem of pollution and ecological destruction, and therefore won the first prize of National Technology Achievements and top Global 500 for Environment awarded by the United Nations.
During 1990s and 2000s, Mr. Jin supervised, organized and participated in the compilation of The Strategies on Nature Conservation in China and Action Plan on Bio-diversity Protection in China, which were approved by the State Council and published later on. “The Strategies" was awarded the third prize of National Technology Achievements, and “Action Plan" was presented at the first Bio-diversity Agreement Conference held in Bahamas in 1994 and applauded by the chairman and the presidium. At the same time, he put forward “comprehensive regulation, active protection, scientific management, sustainable utilization" concerning environmental protection policies and “ecological protection and pollution control", and these two proposals were adopted by the SEPA, approved by the State Council and implemented by relevant agencies nationwide.
Up to now, Mr. Jin has won numerous awards for his research and management work on environment and nature protection, including prizes of Technology Achievements granted by the State and ministries, the certificate on “Distinguished Scientist in Science and Technology" by the State Council, “Distinguished Contributor to Science and Technology Development during the Seventh Fiveyear Plan", “Golden Ox Award for Environment" granted by SEPA, “Top Award on International Cooperation"  by Mr. Song Jian, former general director of State Science Committee, as well as State book awards.
