AWARDEE OF TEHCHNOLOGICAL SCIENCES PRIZE

KANG MOKUANG

Abstract

Prof.Kang Mokuang, an specialist of materials science, was burn in 1920 a Xin Ye county in He Nan Province. He graduated from the Department of Mechanics of the National Northwestern Engineering College of China in 1945. Since 1946, He had served in the Airforce Mechanics Academe, Northwestern Engineering College and now he is the professor at the Northwestern Polytechnical University, and the director of the group of teaching and researching for metal materials and it's heat treatment. He also held posts including : the director of the council of editor and examiner of the textbook in the engineering area of University in China (1965-1988), the director of the Chinese Society of Aeronautical and Astronautics (1979-1987). The director of the council of the Science and Technology of the Department of Aviation Industry in China (1979-1988), and the guest professor of Chong Qing University(1985) and Tai Yuan technological University (1992).
In 1966, he directed and successfully invented the Bainitic steel with good weldability and high strength, GC-11. This sort of steel can increase the efficiency of heat treatment on aircraft production to one hundred times, and was used widely in Aviation Industry and was awarded the Second Prize of the Nation Invention Prize in 1985. He went on to research the application of the High strength high toughness Bainitic steel 15CrMnMoVA, and got the second prize of the Technological Sciences Prize of Department the Aviation Industry in 1989.
In 1980s, while researching the bainitic transformation in steel. He discovered and named a new structure: meta-bainite, posted a notice of the process of bainitic nuclear formation, found out many types of bainitic fine structures, and built up the mew model of bainitic shear transformation controlled by solute atom diffusion. These have an important significance not only in the theoretical field but also in practical field. Due to these contribution he was awarded the second prize of the Technological Sciences Prize of the National Educational Committee (1992) and the second prize of the Technological Sciences Prize of Shaanxi Province (1997). From 1984 to 1996, Prof. Kang devoted himself into researching series of the new type meta-bainitic steel with high strength high toughness good weldabity and well wearability. These series of steel have excellent mechanical and technological properties, and have been used in Aviation, Military, Petroleum and Coal industry and made a great success.
Prof. Kang is also an expert in Martensite transformation, and in recent years, Prof. Kang and his group begin the researching in the composite materials C/C and MoSi2 and nanometer sized materials.
Prof. Kang has long been engaged in teaching and researching works and supervised more than 20 Ms, and Ph.D. degree students, made significant contribution to the bainitic transformation. He was awarded the First “Science and Technology Achievements Award of Zhou Zhihong foundation" for his contribution by Chinese Heat Treatment Society (1999).
