ZHENG NANNING

Abstract

Zheng Nanning was born in Dec. 1952 in Nanjing City of Jiangsu Province. He is now the professor of Xi'an Jiaotong University, where he is currently the director of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics of Xi'an Jiaotong University. He graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an, China in 1975, and got M.S. degree in Information Engineering from Xi'an Jiaotong University in 1981. In 1985, he graduated from Keio University in Japan, with a doctoral degree in engineering. He was elected the academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1999. His major research fields include machine vision and pattern recognition, intelligent system, neural network and imaging processing. 
For many years, Professor Zheng Nanning has been committed to the creative study of both the fundamental theory and the practical application of pattern recognition, machine vision and image processing. Quite a lot of his projects, concerning national key technical problems, 863 hi-tech development program and projects from industries, have produced remarkable social economic benefits and become important parts in the development of pattern recognition and artificial intelligence and image processing in China.     
Professor Zheng Nanning's efforts have been rewarded by outstanding accomplishments. He has been devoted to the research and development of a kind of image information-based intelligent control and recognition system, and made an important contribution to industries. He invented a new method of fitting edge curve with feature of curve's normal vectors. He developed a real time convolutor of image and a reconstructable robot vision system with pipeline structure; The Hi-performance Machine Vision System has been widely applied to research departments of aviation, space flight and industries. “JZR-V Precision Assembly Robot Vision" developed by prof.Zheng's group, is novel, original and creative in the aspects of its recognition methods, software and hardware architecture design, and system integration. With computer vision technology, Professor Zheng initiated an on-line interactive stereo depth detecting method, and developed the first stereo X-ray digital subtraction angiography system in China. This invention has greatly promoted the development and the manufacturing of the sophisticated X-ray digital subtraction angiography image processing system for medical use.
The above research achievements and rich experience in engineering of professor Zheng provide important theoretical guidance and key technology for building both computer vision system in practical application and image-based intelligent control system.
Professor Zheng has also made outstanding contributions to the Chinese color TV manufacturing industry. He was in charge of the development of ASICs of scan conversion and image processing of digital processed TV which provided the technical solution to the device of new products during analog TV's transition into full digital TV.
Science and Technology Awards for the Chinese Youth, Returned Chinese with Prominent Contributions, National Level Mid-aged and Young Experts with Outstanding Contributions and the Young Chinese Scientists are among the prizes and titles awarded to professor Zheng Nanning.
