Abstract

Professor Fan Xuji(H.T.Fan) received his M.E. degree from the Harbin Institute of Technology, China, in 1934 and his M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautical Engineering from California Institute of Technology, U.S.A., in 1937 and 1938 respectively. He studied for Ph.D. degree under Prof. Theodore Von Karman.
Since he returned to China in 1940, he served China establishing aeronautical science and industry with great achievements. He worked as Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Zhejiang University, 1940-1942; Research Fellow of Aeronautical Research Institute of the National Aeronautical Committee, 1942-1943; Professor of the Aeronautical Research Institute of Tsinghua University, 1943-1945; Professor and dean of the Department of Aeronautics, Zhejiang University, 1945-1952; The Founder and Chairman of the Administrative committee and Provost of East China Aeronautical Institute, 1952-1956; Chairman of the Administrative Committee, Vice President and Provost of Nanjing Aeronautical Institute, 1956-1979. From 1979 to 1984 he was the President of Shanghai Jiaotong University.
He has conducted and directed numerous research projects and establishment of various laboratories. He was the founder and director of the Dynamic Thermal Simulation Research Laboratory, 1960-1964. From 1962-1964, he directed the design of the first target drone and is now still in production and in service. From 1958-1960, the design and establishment of 2.5~3 m low speed wind tunnel as well as a 600mm×600mm supersonic wind tunnel.
Being the honorary member and member of the Directorate of the Chinese Society of Mechanics, Chairman of the Directorate of Shanghai Society of Mechanics, Chairman of the First Jiangsu Aeronautical Society, Chairman of the Directorate of Jiangsu Society of Mechanics, he has not only made great achievements in aeronautical science, but also had potent influence in the field of Mechanics. Besides his academic pursuits, he also served as the Deputy to the First, Second and Third People's Congress of Jiangsu Province (1953-1963) and the Third National People's Congress (1963-1969).
He is now still active and directs researches and graduate students at Shanghai Jiaotong University and Nanjing University of Aeronautical and Astronautical as well. Some representative published papers are:  Numerical Analysis of Uncoupled Dynamic Problem of Thermal-Elasticity, with K.K.Chen and N.     S.Sun, Journal of Thermal Stress, Vol.7, No.2, 1984, pp149-161; Analysis of The Secondary Stability of Compressible Boundary Layer Flows Over a Two-Dimensional Plate, Applied Mathematic and Mechanics (English Edition) Vol.20,NO.5,1999;  Three-Dimension Natural Convection in the Annulus Between Two Horizontal Concentric Cylinders, ASME NHTC 2000-12284,Proceedings of 34th National Heat Transfer Conference,2000,  etc. He had received numerous awards and praises from different sources of the government and engineering departments for his contributions in the field of aeronautical science and education.
