Abstract

Ding Xiaqi, mathematician, was born on 25 May  1928 in the Yi Yang County of the Hunan Province. He received his B.S. degree in Mathematics from the Wuhan University. At present he is a research professor of the Institute of Applied Mathematics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is also among the first group of academics who qualified as Ph.D. thesis supervisors. In 1991, Prof. Ding was elected academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. His research  interest covers a wide range of topics, including PDEs, function spaces, number theory, mathematical statistics, harmonic analysis and numerical analysis. Among these topics, he particularly excelled in PDEs and function spaces.
His contributions on mixed type PDEs, elliptic systems and discontinuous solution of hyperbolic conservation laws received a lot of international attention. He worked a long time on function spaces and embedding theorems, found and corrected some important mistakes of classical books abroad, solved the problem on calculus of variation with strong nonlinearity, initial boundary value problem of parabolic equation with strong nonlinearity, established the theory of Ba space. Especially he and others solved the famous mathematical problem on the existence of global solution of the isentropic gas dynamics equations.
Prof. Ding has published more than one hundred papers, 4 monographs and 3 pcpular science publications. He has also been overseas many times to give lectures and taken part in international conferences. He also chaired and organized many international conferences.
