JIANG SICHANG

Abstract

Professor Jiang Sichang, senior academician of Chinese academy of engineering,is a famous otorhinolaryngologist. During his medical practice over 60  years, he has made great contributions to the establishment and development of Chinese otolaryngology.
Professor Jiang is an accomplished otolaryngologic surgeon. In the year of 1950, he diagnosed and operated on the first case of otosclerosis in China. Up to now, he has performed over 4000 stapedectomies with the effective rate being 94.8%. Since 1950, a lot of clinical work had been done on the surgical treatment of chronic otitis media.With the modification of surgical technique, he had operated on 2000 patients, the success rate reached 93%. Professor Jiang is the first physician in China   to examine esophagus, trachea and bronchus with fibro-endoscope, which   accelerated the popularization of this technique in China. Under the guidance of professor Jiang, neuro-otologic surgery and base surgery skull surgery had been extensively conducted in PLA General hospital, including acoustic neuroma surgery, resections sphenoid and clivus tumors, facial nerve decompression, anastomosis and implantation surgery, CSF   rhinorrhea repair through different approaches, surgical management of   Meniere's disease and so on.
Professor Jiang is an innovative researcher. His major research work is sensorineural deafness including mechanism prevention and treatment.He is specialized on the topic ear pathology, Through his effort, a well equipped ENT institute, was established in 1990.In the institute, there   are 400 pairs temporal bone pathology laboratory, audiology and auditory science laboratory, vestibular physiology and vestibular research laboratory, and molecular biology and biochemistry laboratory. In recent years, AP tuning curves, otoacoustic emission, ionic channels of inner ear hair cells, microcirculation of inner ear have been studied. In addition, the prevention and medical management of presbycusis, noise deafness, ototoxic deafness, Mediere's disease have been investigated.
Besides research and clinical expertise, professor Jiang is a gifted teacher.  He has tutored 2 postgraduates, 50 Ph degree and medical master candidates, and many ENT Chairman in army hospitals were his former students, during his professional career, professor Jiang published 8 textbooks, 200 scientific papers, received many prestigious awards, including General secretary Jiang Ze-Ming's inscription: Ever advancing technology successors all over the country.
