Abstract

Ye Zhizheng, the academician of Chinese Academy of Science, is a famous sedimentologist and marine geologist in China.  He was born in 1918 and graduated from Central University in 1941 all in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province.  He studied as postgraduate during 1946 to 1949 in USA, and gained master degree in the field of sedimentary geology in 1948 from the University of Missouri-Colombia. He stopped the Ph.  D. study in the field of clay mineral from Colombia University, and came back to China immediately in Oct. 1949 for meeting the urgent needs of geological survey works in the new China at that period.  Since then, he has worked in the area of sedimentary geology, marine geology, and geological education in China for more than 48 years. He took a series of position as following: Professor, Chairman of Dept. of Marine Geology and Dean of graduate studies in Changchun College of Geology during 1952-1964; President of Nanjing Institute of Geology & Mineral Resources, Qingdao Institute of Marine Geology of Geology & Mineral Resources Ministry of China during 1964-1985; Ex-Chairman of Chinese Marine Geological Society during 1985 to early 1990' s; Honorary President, Nanjing Institute of Geology & Mineral Resources; Director, Research Center of the Quaternary Geology, Ministry of Geology & Mineral Resources of China; Honorary Chairman of the director on board of Chinese Marine Geological Society; Vice-President, Commission of Sedimentary Geology of Geological Society of China; member, the Standing Committee of Chinese Oceanology Society; chief editor of Marine Geology & Quaternary Geology  and deputy chief editor of Acta Sedimentologica Sinica; part-time Professor of Dept. of Marine Geology, Tongji University, Concurrent Professor of Dept. of Geo & Ocean Sciences and Dept. of Earth Sciences, Nanjing University; supervisor of Ph.  D. students; senior technical consultant of the Bureau of Guangzhou Marine Survey; standing member of CPPCC, Jiangsu Committee; national correspondent, the International Association of Sedimentologists; board member, the International Geological Correlation Programme.
Professor YE Zhizheng dedicates his life to the causes and undertakings of the geological education and research of sedimentary geology and marine geology and is the founder of sedimentary geology and marine geology of new China.  His principal works and papers include: “Some modem conceptions of marine geology and basic problems about geology” (A scientific collection  of Changchun College of Geology, 1962), “Texture classification of carbonate rocks” (Geological Review, 22(5), 1964), “Sedimentation of Sinian algal carbonate rocks” (Acta Geologica Sinica, 45(4), 1965), “A preliminary study on the late Pleistocene-Holocene sediments from the Okinawa Trough off Donghai” (Marine Geology & Quaternary Geology, 3(2), 1983), “Sedimentary structure and facies model of late Pleistocene eolian biocalcarenites inisl.   Shidao of Xisha Archipelego, China” (Acta Oceanologica Sinica, 4(4), 1985), “Contributions to late Quaternary paleooceanography of the South China Sea”       (Qingdao Ocean University Press, 1992), “Sedimentary geology and stratabound massive sulphide deposits of late Carboniferous Weining age in the middle and lower Yangtze area” (Geological Publishing House, Bejing, China, 1993), etc. in the middle and lower Yangtze area“ (Geological Publishing House, Beijing, China, 1993), etc.
