ZHAO RENKAI

Abstract

Prof. Zhao Renkai, nuclear energy engineering specialist, was born in Nanking, Jiangsu Province, in 1923. He graduated from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, National Central University in 1946. He worked as deputy director and chief engineer of Nuclear Power Research and Design Institute of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), cheif design engineer of submarine nuclear power of the Commission of National Defense Science and Industry,vice-president of the Commission of Science and Technology of CNNC. vice-chairman of the Commission of Specialist of the National Nuclear Safety Administration, vice-chairman of the Commission of Specialist of the Bureau of Navy Nuclear Safety, chief scientist of the Second Commission of Specialist of energy region of the National High Technology and Science Development Plan (the 863 Plan). He was elected member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1991, and was elected a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1993. He won the top grade award, the first grade award and the third grade award once for each, of National Prize of Science and Technology Progress (NPSTP).
He participated nuclear science and technology research and design work since 1956, as one of the major responsible person, he participated the research, design, construction, commissioning of the Chinese first heavy water experimental reactor, Chinese first graphate water cooled military use production reactor, Chinese first nuclear power installation of submarine and its land base protol type installation and so on. He has greatly contributed to the development of military use reactors and the nuclear energy technology. He is one of the Chinese first generation excellent scientist and the pioneer of Chinese nuclear energy development.
