YAO XI

Abstract

Dr. Yao Xi, materials expert, was born in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, September, 1935. Dr. Yao is a professor of Xian Jiaotong University and Shanghai Tongji University. He is also dierctor of Electronic Materials Ressearch Laboratory (EMRL) at Xian Jiaotong University and Functional Materials Research Laboratory at Tongji University (FMRL). Professor Yao is a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Yao graduated in 1957 from Jiaotong University, Shanghai, China, majoring in Electrical Engineering. From 1957 to 1979, he served as an assistant, lecturer of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department, Xian Jiaotong University. In 1979, he visited the Materials Research Laboratory, Pennsylvania State University, USA and earned his Ph. D of Solied State Science in 1982. He is the first one among the exchange visitors from China whom has been conferred a doctorate in United States after the country opened to the outside of the world. He completed his post doctor research in Penn. State University from 1982 to 1983. Then, he came back from the States and served as an associate professor of the Xian Jiaotong University. He was soon granted the full professorship and supervisor of doctorate sudent directly from the State Higher Education Ministry and the Academic Degree Commission of the State Council under a special promotion scheme. He is the first doctorate supervisor in the field of Electronic Materials and Devices in China. He started organizing the Electronic Materials Research Laboratory in Xian Jiaotong University in 1986 and Functional Materials Research Laboratory in Tongji University in 1997. In 1991, he was elected as a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Prof. Yao is a well known material scientist. He has published over 300 technical paper, held 12 patents. He serves many of the professional societies and national research boards of the Country. He is also a member of the International Ceramic Academy and the chairperson of the Asian Ferroeledctric Association. Prof. Yao is an awardee of the Xerox award and the Ross-Coffin Purdy Award and also many of the awards of the Country.
The major research interests of Prof. Yao are dielectric materials and devices, ferroelectric, piezoelectric and pyroelectric materials and devices, oxide and compound semiconductors and devices, functional nano composite materials and devices, smart sensor and smart actuator, integrated ferroelectrics and ferroelectric micro electro-mechanical system.
