Abstract

Professor He Binglin, a polymer chemist, was born in Panyu Country, Guangdong Province in 1918. After his graduation in Peizheng High School in Guangzhou, he studied in the Department of Chemistry of Southwest Associated University where he got B.S. degree and then in the Indiana University of USA where he obtained the degree of Ph. D. After returning to China, he worked as a professor in the Chemistry Departemnt of Nankai University; then successively as the vice chairman, chairman of the Chemistry Department and the director of the Institute of Polymer Chemistry. In the middle of nineteen eighty, he had been concurrently president of the Qingdao University.
Professor He is the pioneer and founder of the ion exchanger and polymer adsorbent in China. When he returned from the USA in 1956, he brought with him 10kg of styrene and 5kg of divinylbenzene which have not been manufactured in China by that time. As soon as he started his research, he used the abovementioned raw materials to prepare strongly basic anion exchangers which were used for the extraction and separation of the uranium from the uranium ore. When he considered that China needs to develop atomic energy he made up his mind to prepare the strongly basic anion exchangers as the key research. Not long after, he got very satisfactory product. For this reason, the government supported Nankai University financially to build the first ion exchange plant in China. The product met the urgent need for the purpose. For this, he made great contribution to the development of the atomic energy and the first explosion of the atomic bomb in our country. Thereafter, there have been many technicians from other ion exchanger factories coming to Nankai Plant to learn the technique of producing good ion exchanger.
Later on, Professor He concentrated his mind to study on the synthesis, structure, property and application of ion exchangers and after 1976, he extended his research field to polymer adsorbents. For this, he not only obtained more new types of ion exchangers and polymer adsorbents, but also extended his research work to the field of biomedical materials, biotechnology, immobilization of enzymes for the purpose of resolution of D,L-amino acids, extraction and purification of antibioctics, environmental protection ect.
Professor He has published over 550 scientific papers in domestic and international academic journals and 102 review prpers in Chinese journals; beside he and the associate editor-in-chief published a book entitled“Ion Exchange and Adsorption”in 1995.
Since 1964, he has received over 20 awards from the state, ministries, province and municipality.
