Abstract

Prof. Wang Zhijiang, a Physicist specialized in optical science, was born in 1930 in Hangzhou, Zhejing Province. His research interest covers wide areas including optical design, image formation and evaluation, optical instrument, optical information processing, lasers, laser physics, and laser applications. He has published more than 200 papers and several monographs in various fields of optics.
In optical design and optical instruments, Prof. Wang extended the aberration theory and the method for imaging quality evaluation. His book on the theory of optical design was published in 1964 and reprinted in 1985, which has been widely used and referred in China. He led and involved in the development of various optical instruments in China. In laser technology, he demonstrated independently Chinas first laser, which operated successfully in 1961. Later, he led the development of solid state laser systems with high power and high energy. He developed the laser resonator theory and the methods for mode restriction, which resulted in the realization of high brightness laser systems. He proposed a theory of coherent radiation from free electron beam as early as 1963, and pointed out the fundamental importance of the brightness of electron beam for free electron laser. In 1985, he directed the demonstration of Chinas first free electron laser. He also organized and contributed to the programs for using of lasers in various applications. In recent years, his research has included optical information processing and high resolution optical scanning. A book on image formation and processing was published in 1990.
Prof. Wang is a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is currently emeritus director of the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (SIOM), Chinese Academy of Science, he is appointed as professor at several leading universities in China, such as the Chinese University of Science and Technology, Zhejiang University, and Dalian Institute of Technology. Professor Wang was director of the SIOM, director of Shanghai Institute of Laser Technology, and vice president of the Chinese Optical Society. He was editor of Optica Acta Sinica, Chinese Laser Journal, member of Editorial Board of Chinese Physics (a publication of American Institute of Physics), and overseas Editorial Advisory Panel of Optics Letters. Professor Wang is a fellow of SPIE and a fellow of the Optical Society of America.
