Abstract

Prof. Dr. Wu Jieping was born in 1917, Changzhou, China. Currently he is the Vice Chairman, the Standing Committee of the National Peoples Congress of the Peoples Republic of China, Chairman, Chiu-San Society; President, the Western Returned Scholars Association; Vice Chairman, China Family Planning Association.
He is a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Honorary President, China Association for Science and Technology; Honorary President, the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences; Honorary President, Peking Union Medical College; Honorary President, Beijing Medical University; Honorary President, the Chinese Medical Association.
He also holds such eminent international posts as Vice Chairman, the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF); Chairman, East Southeast Asia, Oceanic Region, IPPP; Member, the Third World Academy of Sciences; Honorary Fellow, the American College of Physicians; Member in Foreign Country, the Belgian Royal Academy of Medicine; Honorary Fellow, the Royal College of Surgeon of Edinburgh; Honorary Fellow, the Hong Kong College of Surgeons; and Honorary Member of the International Society of Surgery.
Prof. Dr. Wu Jieping obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from Yenching University, China in 1937; Doctor of Medicine from Union Medical College in 1942; Doctor of Science, Chinese University of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in 1997. He was a research scientist at the University of Chicago, USA in 1947-1948.
As a pioneer scientist in the field of urological surgery in New China, Prof. Dr. Wu Jieping has made outstanding contributions in vas sterilization. His research on late complications of renal tuberculosis saved dying renal tuberculosis patients. In the field of family planning, he put forward irrigation of lower part of spermatic duct during vasoligation which brings immediate contraceptive effect. His identification of adrenal medullar hyperlasia as an independent disease has been recognized internationally. His research on post-nephrectomy compensatory renal growth corrected the erroneous understanding of this problem existed in the past.
During his 50-year engagement in medicine, he published over 150 medical articles, and compiled 21 medical books with 13 as the chief author. He won many national awards such as the National Award for Science and Technology for seven times, the First National Scientific Award on Population Science and Research, the First Award of Distinguished Professor of the Beijing Medical University, and the Grand Medal of Paris, France, and Suzuki Uro-Medicine Award, Japan.
