AWARDEE OF EARTH SCIENCES PRIZE

YE LIANJUN

Abstract

Prof.Ye Lianjun,a sedimentalogist, was born on July 19,1913 in Rizhao,Shandong Province, specialized in sedimentary mineral deposits. He graduated from the Peking University in 1937,and then enrolled to the former Central Geological Survey of China as a geologist. In 1945-1947,he went to U.S.A.to extend his geological study first in the Division of Groundwater of the Federal Geological Survey of America at Washington,D.C.,and later dispatched to the American Bureau of Reclamation at Denver,Colo.to join the Sino-America Cooperative Planning Research Group of the Y.V.A.Project.He back to China in 1947,and founded the first Department on Engineering Geology of the former Central Geological Survey of China.
In the early years before 1949,he worked principally on stratigraphy and structural geology. He had investigated the regional geology of Southern Kansu Province in 1939-1940,and later published a Memoir of the Structural Evolution of the Western Tsinling Range.
In the spring of 1949,he transferred to the Institute of Geology,Chinese Academy of Sciences as a research professor and doctor candidate supervisor, and devoted chiefly to the investigation on sedimentary mineral deposits. In 1952,he erected the first Department of sedimentalogy in China, and later in 1974,with the concerted effort of his colleagues,he founded the first Chinese Society of Sedimentalogy. In 1980,he was elected an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the standing member and standing vice chairman of the Division of Geosciences of the Academy.
Since 1949,Ye devoted to the study of sedimentary ore deposits, especially on P,Mn,Fe deposits, for almost 50 years. He also spent quite a lot of efforts on petroleum geology,as well as engineering geology. He made many a new contribution on theoretical considerations of sedimentary ore deposits. He published more than hundred papers and 8 volumes of monographs, such like “A Theory of Imbibition of Terrestrial Weathering Products-A New Concept of the Genesis of Sedimentary Deposits”,“The Metallogenic Epochs of Sedimentary Ore Deposits and Their Historico-geological Meaning”,“The Physical Enrichment of Industrial Phosphorites”,“The Multiprocesses and polyepisodic Nature of Ore Genesis”,“The Aspects of Biomineralization”,“The Phosphorites of China” etc.
Ye has been awarded 11 prizes, both of the State and the Academy, chiefly of the first and second grade, being either of the “Science Prize” or the “Progress on Science and Technology”.Most of the first author.
Ye has supervised 42 postgraduate students, including 20 master candidates,16 doctor candidates,4 post-doctor candidates, and three newly enrolled doctor candidates.
Ye has been councilor of the “The International Association of Sedimentalogists”,member of the “Sedimentalogy Committee,IUGS”,member of the “China Committee of the ‘World Petroleum Congree’”,vice-chairman of “the China Committee of the IGCP Committee,IUGS”,standing councilor of “the Geological Society of China”,vice chairman of “the Chinese Society of Mineralogy,Petology, and Geochemistry”,and honorary professor of several domestic universities.
