Sun Jinshan

Sun Jinshan, a researcher and expert of explosion mechanics, was born in October 1941 in Jiangyin City, Jiangsu Province. After graduating from Fudan University in 1964, he worked successively at No.9 Station of No. 9 Institute under the Second Ministry of Mechanical Industry, Beijing Institute of Applied Physics & Computational Mathematics, China Academy of Engineering Physics (CAEP) and Research Center of Laser Fusion CAEP, as a technician, assistant researcher, researcher, team leader/ deputy team leader, director/ deputy director of the office, director/ deputy director of the station, vice president, director and member of the academic expert commission, respectively.
In his work of over 40 years, Researcher Sun achieved fruitful results in the nuke science and engineering technology sector and made an important contribution to the national defense. He was an outstanding expert and leader in developing nuclear weapons. His main achievements are as follows:
Ⅰ. Development of nuclear weapons
Researcher Sun has taken part in the research and designing of multiple models of China’s first generation hydrogen bombs “secondary,” organized research teams and offices to participate in the principle breakthrough and miniaturization of the new generation hydrogen bombs “secondary.” As the technology leader of the institute, he has been responsible for the theoretical design and made an important contribution to the nuclear test process before the nuclear test was banned. On the technology leadership position of the institute, he was responsible for the development of nuclear weapon models, advanced research of the nuclear science and technology and the organizing and implementation of outfield activities that do not breach promises and laser nuclear detonation simulation, laying a solid foundation for the continuous development of China’s nuclear weapons. Because of his excellent achievements and outstanding contribution in the physical design of nuclear weapons and engineering construction, he has won twice the special class of the National Science & Technology Progress Award (ranking No. 22 in 1987 and No. 4 in 1995), once the first class of the National Science & Technology Progress Award (ranking No. 2 in 2006), once the second class of the National Science & Technology Progress Award (ranking No. 1 in 2002) and four times of the first class and three times of the second class of science and technology progress awards at the level of ministries and commissions.
Ⅱ. Application research of basic theories
Researcher Sun has always attached great importance to combining the model design of weapons with application research of the basic theory and the theory with the experiment. He had excellent accomplishments in the interdisciplinary field of mechanics and weapon physics, made indepth research in detonation, stability of motion, numerical simulation and weapon physics, carried out effective application combining the model design of weapons, promoted the model development and boosted the development of applicable basic theory. He coauthored a monograph entitled Theoretical Detonation Physics (ranking No 1), translated Detonation (ranking No 4), published more than 20 academic articles and wrote over 30 internal subject design reports.
Researcher Sun was rigorous and meticulous in work, active in thinking, honest in study, pragmatic and good at organizing and coordinating work. When tackling key problems in the nuclear weapon broad system, he could modestly unite all scientific and technical personnel to make collective researches, brainstorm and work in team before making decision. He has won titles of “national middleaged and young expert with outstanding contributions,” outstanding returnee, model worker at the ministry level and advanced worker at the academy and institute levels.
Researcher Sun loved the motherland and the cause of national defense. When he studied and worked in the United States, following the organizational arrangement, he terminated the contract without hesitation and returned to work in China before the “June 4 Movement,” showing his lofty love for the motherland.
