Chen Xi

Chen Xi was born in Zhejiang Province in 1964. He received a bachelors degree from Xinjiang University, masters degree from Institute of Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and doctors degree from Wuhan University. He was recommended by the Intellectual Introduction Office of State Council of China to study highlevel computer software technology in Fujitsu Ltd., Japan, during 1993-1995. As a visiting professor, he studied in University of Regina, Canada, during 2001-2002. Currently, he is the director of Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, CAS, and also serves as the director of Xinjiang Key Laboratory of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System, the vice chairman of China Society of Natural Resources, the chairman of Xinjiang Society of Natural Resources, and the chairman of Xinjiang Society of Remote Sensing Application.
Professor Chen engages in the research fields of hydrology and water resources, remote sensing and geographic information system. He put forward the quantitative method of extracting remote sensing (RS) information to sparse vegetation in arid areas in the world, developed the theoretical and technical systems of redistributing ecological water consumption in continental drainage basins, and established the national key water redistribution and management system for the Tarim River, the largest continental river in China, which made great social, economic and ecological benefits.
Professor Chen and his research team have achieved scientific results as follows:
1. Established the geometric structural model and the hierarchical models of vegetation coverage, which significantly increased the inversion accuracy and theoretically support the international RS monitoring in arid area.
2. Developed massperformance RS monitoring technical system of arid land ecosystem by the seamless mosaic between multiscale and multidate, the integrated method of multiplatform data, the storage and processing method of mass data, and image registration technology without or with few reference points. Four management and decisionmaking application systems were established based on the system which played important roles in management and decisionmaking of ecological and water resources’ security in arid area.
3. Developed the realtime monitoring and water redistribution system for ecology, production and life in arid area by the methods of telemetry, remote sensing, and satellite and microwave communication technologies.
4. Developed and finished the 1/3 management technical system of terrestrial national boundaries of China.
5. Put forward the theoretical framework of the ecological process in arid lands in Central Asia, which reveals the research fields of carbon process and global change of saline or alkaline soil in arid land.
Professor Chen has made many achievements in scientific researches, including the Special Prize for Progress in Science and Technology of Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region in 2009; the Second National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology in 2006, 2007 and 2008; and the First Prize for Progress in Science and Technology of Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region in 2007. He was gloriously elected as one of the Top Ten Most Outstanding Young People of the CAS in 2004, and one of the National Advanced Workers in 2005.
His published books include Physical Geography in Arid Areas of China, Land Use/Cover Change in Arid Areas of China, and Water Resources Planning and Management Based on Sustainable Development. He published more than 100 papers on journals of Science in China (Series D), Chinese Science Bulletin, Hydrology, Hydrological Process, Journal of Arid Land, etc., and registered 10 computer softwares. Professor Chen held four international conferences about hydrological cycle and climate change in continental drainage basins in arid area, which caused great repercussions on the researches of arid resources and environments in the world.
