Zhu Jimao

AWARDEE OF TECHNOLOGICAL SCIENCES PRIZE

ZHU JIMAO

Zhu Jimao, Professor, expert of underwater vehicle. He was born in Shanghai in Feb.2, 1937.He graduated from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1954,and in 1964, he graduated from the First National Hydrodynamic Seminar of China.
Since 1960, he engaged in the enterprise for developing submarine of China. At the beginning of 1970s, he acted as the master engineer for designing of Chinas first DSRV, and successfully accomplished the task of 2 submarines underwater connection and drytransferred 7 submarine crew members, this was honored as the first prize of China National Science & Technology Advancement in 1989.
At the earlier time of 80 years, he independently cooperated with foreign coterie, accomplished the development and manufacturing work of 5 types Remotely Operated Vehicles (for observation and underwater performance), this can be counted as a great achievement which broke the international monopolization in the research area of ROVs.
In 1993, he presided the research and manufacturing work of “6000m Deep Sea Towing & Survey System” and made great contribution for the selection about Chinas deep sea exploration areas formineral resources. This project was honored as the secondclass prize of China National Science & Technology Advancement.
After 1995, he took charge about the research and manufacturing work of “Deep Sea Cable Burying System MG1” and fulfilled 90 kms optics cables burying task attributed to China specified by the contract signed with Japan. Up to present, multitypes Cable and Pipeline Burying Systems had been developed subsequently. In addition, a set of comprehensive monitoring and control system which has independent intelligent property was also successfully developed, successively fulfilled totally more than 30 engineering projects, such as the cable burying work for supplying electric power from Shanghai to Shengsi (120 km), the electrical cables burying work from Chongming island to Changxing island (18 km) and the pipeline laying work for transferring oil and natural gas in Hainan EAST 101 Oil Field (50 km).
In 2004, he acted as the chief engineer for the developing task of “3500 meters deepsea ROV system for sampling,” and accomplished its sea trial in the same year. In 2004, he also successfully developed the “Deep Sea Bacteria Dilution and Culture System”. Additionally, the National Key Laboratory of Ocean Biology was also built up for matching the system.
From 1977, 6 times he gained ministryclass or nationallclass diplomas, and in 1989, he was awarded the title of. “Middle and Young Age Experts with Outstanding Contributions of China.” In the year of 2004, he won the prize of “Shanghai Excellent Persons with Ability in Science & Technology.”
For Prof. Zhus outstanding contributions and scientific attainments in the research area of submersible technology, he was elected as one of the chairmen of International Consultative Committee of Underwater Technology.
