AWARDEE OF METEOROLOGY PRIZE

ZHAO BOLIN

Prof. Zhao Bolin, an atmospheric scientist, was born in April 1929 in Liaozhong County, Liaoning Province. He graduated from Dept. Meteorology of Tsinghua University in 1952. Since 1952, he worked in Peking University.
Now, he is a professor of Dept. Atmospheric Sciences, School of Physics, Peking University. He was elected the academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1991. He also was elected the academician of the International Higher Education Academy of Sciences, Moscow, in 1994.
He measured the droplet charge of cloud with aerostate (in Russia). Then the mechanisms of the increase rainfall of nimbostratus cloud and the hail growth have been studied. The results have been used in practice.
Zhao Bolins group has developed a series of microwave radiometer for meteorology. The atmospheric sounding and weather process have been measured with the multi-frequency microwave radiometers. The results were useful for weather prediction. The microwave characteristics of ground truth have been studied in the laboratory, for example, oil slick on water surface and soil moisture.
The atmospheric pollution has been studied with the optical remote sensing. The new methods of atmospheric aerosol and NO2measurement have been developed. The dust storm and atmospheric ozone have been studied with satellite data.
Zhao Bolin and his group, with his multi-frequency microwave radiometers, have successfully taken part in the Western North Pacific Cloud Radiation Experiment of the International Satellite Climatology Project, WCRP (World Climate Research Program).
Zhao Bolin, as a Chairman, has carried out the Energy and Water Cycle of Huaihe River Basin, a subprogram of Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment of WCRP.
