XIE HUAAN

Prof. Xie Huaan, a rice breeder, was born in Aug. 1941 in Longyan, Fujian Province. He graduated from Longyan Agricultural School of Fujian Province in 1959, then completed the further study courses in Fujian Agricultural College in 1964. He worked as a teacher in Yongan Datao Agricultural School, Yongan Agricultural School and Yongan Agricultural Profession School from 1959 to 1972. In 1972, he joined in Sanming Institute of Agricultural Sciences in Fujian, as a assistant research scientist, associate research scientist, research scientist and vice director of the institute successively, then was appointed as the director of the institute in 1990. He has been the president of Fujian Academy of Agricultural Sciences since 1996, and at the same time, as a visiting professor, he was a advisor for master degree students and a member of instruction committee for doctorial students in Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University and in Huazhong Agricultural University. He is a vice chairperson of Fujian Science and Technology Association. He was a deputy to the 8th National People’s Congress of China, a member of the 9th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and is also a member of the 10th CPPCC.
He has been working in hybrid rice breeding since 1972. He has developed more than ten hybrid rice varieties and fertility restoring lines approved to release by Crop Variety Evaluation Committee. Among these hybrid rice, Xianyou 63, the best hybrid rice, which has occupied biggest hybrid rice area in China since 1987, was awarded the first class prize of National Award of Science and Technology Advancement (ASTA) in 1988; Among fertility restorer, Minghui 63, the best fertility restorer, which is widest used in hybrid rice, was awarded the first class prize of Fujian ASTA in 1999. He was conferred as a outstanding youth scientist and the National Labour Paragon in 1988 and the National Advanced Worker in 1989 by national personnel department, and the Provincial Labour Paragon in 1987,and 1989 and the excellent expert in 1991 in Fujian. Besides, he was awarded Chen Jiagen Award for Agricultural Sciences by Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1999, China Award for Agricultural Science and Education in 1998, and Dupont Innovation Award for Science and Technology in 2002.
