AWARDEE OF PHYSICS PRIZE

SHEN XUECHU

Shen Xuechu, a physicist, was born in Jiangsu Liyang in April 1938. He graduated from Fudan University in October 1958 and entered Shanghai Institute of Technical Physics afterwards. He started to build up the Laboratory for Infrared Physics with his colleagues in 1985 and had been the director of the opening laboratory of Chinese Academy of Sciences and the State Key Laboratory for Infrared Physics between 1985 and 1993. He has been the chairman of the academic committee of the Laboratory since 1993. Shen Xuechu has been the concurrent professor of Fudan University and the ean of Sciences of Shanghai University since 2001, and has been elected the academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Section of Mathematics and Physics in 1995.
Shen Xuechu has been engaged in the study of solid state spectroscopy and its experimental methods for a long time. His representative results include the following: The localized acoustic vibration modes induced by light impurities in covalent crystals such as semiconductors and their disordered network; the vibration modes related with impurities or components phosphor and boron in doped or alloyed amorphous silicon; the hybridization between p and d electronic states and the optical transitions related with pure or hybridized d electrons in diluted magnetic semiconductors; the photothermal ionization spectroscopy of shallow impurities in ultra-pure semiconductors, and the impurity electron-electron interaction as well as electron-phonon interaction or the hybridization & wave-function re-composition between these different states under magnetic fields; the quantum states and interband or intraband optical transitions between different quantum states of semiconductor superlattice or quantum well structures. He has won the first grade rewards of Chinese Academy of Sciences for natural sciences twice and the national rewards for natural sciences twice due to above results in last 15 years. He was also awarded as a national young or middle-aged expert with outstanding contributions in 1988.
Shen Xuechu has published 4 books, including Spectroscopy and Optical Properties of Semiconductors, which was published by Scientific Publ. Co. of China in 2002, as well as more than 200 papers in different journals. Quite a lot of his results were edited or cited in specialized publications, handbooks and even textbooks at home and abroad. One of his research articles was selected to be collected in the milestone volume of The Twentieth  Century Night-sight Technology published by SPIE in 2001.
