YAO TANDONG

Abstract

Yao Tandong born in July 1954 in Gansu Province, is a professor, director of the Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He graduated in Lanzhou University in 1982 with Master's Degree and got his Ph.D. in the Institute of Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in 1986. He studied in France and the United States as a Post Doctor between 1987 and 1989. He worked as Associate Professor in1989 when he returned from his abroad study. Two years later he promoted to Professor. From 1995 to 1998 he worked as Deputy Director of the Lanzhou Institute of Glaciology and Geocryology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 1999 he was appointed as Director of the Lanzhou Institute of Glaciology and Geocryology. In 2000 he worked as Deputy Director of the Cold and Arid Regions Environment and Engineering Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 2001, he was appointed as the Director of the Cold and Arid Regions Environment and Engineering Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Due to his excellent work on ice core study, he got a lot of awards. In 1991, he was awarded as the winner of Prominent Contributor with PH.D by the State Department and Ministry of Education. In 1994 he awarded as the winner of National Outstanding Young Scientists by NSFC. In 1995 he was awarded as the winner of Ten-Outstanding Young Scientists by Lanzhou City, the winner of Basic Research Award in Glaciology and Geocryology and the winner of Outstanding Young Scientists in science study in Tibet. In 1998 he was awarded as the winner of Excellent Returnee. In 1999 he was awarded as the winner of Outstanding Expert of Gansu Province and the winner of Outstanding Expert by Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 2001 he got the award of National Innovation Group Fund by NSFC.        
As one of the pioneers, Yao Tandong has fostered the ice core study in China and got fruitful results. In the past decade, he has published more than 300 papers in which 41 has been published in SCI cited journals. His papers have been cited widely, 310 times in SCI cited journals and 354 times in CSCD cited journals. His achievement in ice core study is highly praised He got National Natural Science Award, Natural Science Award of Chinese Academy of Sciences and National Patent Award.
