WEI BAOWEN

Abstract

Professor Wei Baowen is mainly involved in the study of nuclear physics and accelerator physics and has made remarkable contributions. Through his work on measurements of the cross sections of 9-12MeV neutron inelastic scattering on lithium, the discrepancy between the measurements in peak value region reported by different institutes was cleared up. He was in charge of the design and construction of the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL). Under his leadership the study of intermediate-energy heavy ion physics was initiated in China, an intermediate-energy radioactive ion beam line was set up in Lanzhou, advanced ECR ion source technology was implemented in the Institute of Modern Physics (IMP) and the HIRFL has been successfully improved. In addition, he has actively promoted the synthesis and study of new nuclides in heavy neutron-rich regions by intermediate-energy heavy ion reactions and neutron induced reactions. At present, he is devoted to the study of the accelerating, cooling and storing of the secondary radioactive beam as well as heavy ion physics with high resolution. Led by Prof. Wei, the scientists in the IMP have proposed a new Cooling Storage Ring (CSR) at the HIRFL. The CSR was approved as one of the scientific mega projects of the Ninth National Five-Year Plan. It started in 2000 and will be completed in 2004.
Wei Baowen himself has published more than 80 scientific papers and 12 monographs jointly with others. In the past years, he has won many awards, such as National First Prize of S & T Progress. In 1995, he was elected the academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
