SUN SHU

Abstract

Sun Shu,a geologist,was born on July 23,1933 in Jiangsu Province.He graduated from the Department of Geology,Nanjing University in 1953.He is at present the vice president of the National Natural Science Foundation of China,member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS),deputy director of the Earth Sciences Division of CAS,research professor in the Institute of Geology (IG) of CAS,and director of the Academic Committee of the Laboratory of Lithosphere Tectonic Evolution of IGCAS.
Professor Sun has contributed greatly,during the last four decades of his scientific career,to sedimentology,regional geology and tectonics in China.Ever since late 70s he has also devoted a large share of his efforts to promoting the development of earth sciences in China.
In early 1950's,Sun Shu participated in the discovery of the Xiangtan manganese carbonate deposit of great economic significance.From 1956-1960,he chaired a Sino-Soviet joint project which revealed the geological evolution of the Xiaoxinganling,Wandashan and Zhangguangcailing Mountains.During 1960's-1980's,Professor Sun worked on a series of research projects covering phosphorites,alumophosphate rocks,tidal and storm siliciclastic rocks,paleogeographic and paleoclimatological studies,geochemical studies,iron deposits,and basin analysis.Moreover,he and Professor K.J.Hsu(ETH,Switzerland) worked together to develop a Sino-Swiss cooperative project in middle 1980's to study plate tectonics which lasted for more than 10 years and led to the publishing of the Tectonic Facies Map of China.
Professor Sun has published over 60 research articles and 4 monographs.He has supervised a dozen of doctoral candidates,and some of his students are now professors in research institutions.
Professor Sun has made much effort on international scientific cooperation.He was Chairman of the International Working Group of IGCP project 199 and Council Member of the International Association of Sedimentologists.Now he is council member and executive board member of the Pacific Science Association,member of the Global Sedimentary Geology Programme Commission of the International Union of Geological Sciences(IUGS),and bureau member of the International Lithosphere Programme.
Professor Sun has been involved in various professional societies.He is vice-president of the Chinese Petroleum Society,vice-president of the Chinese Society of Mineralogy,Petrology and Geochemistry,and vice-president of the Geological Society of China.
Professor Sun has been honored by some international organizations.He is honorary Fellow of the Geological society of London,Fellow of the Third World Academy of Sciences,and Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences.
