LIU GUANGDING

Abstract

Prof,Liu Guangding,geophysicist,was born in Beijing on 29 December 1929.He graduated from the Department of Physics,University in 1956,then started his geophysical undertaking.
During 1952-1964,Liu-Guangding teacher Seismic Prospecting and Geophysical Exploration in Beijing College of Geology.He was director of Petroleum Geophysics Lab.and assistant of the head of Department.In 1954-1956,he played as the interpreter of Russian Seismic Expert and assisted to teach graduated students.In 1959,took practice on marine geophysics for petroleum prospecting in Caspian Sea,USSR.After return back in 1960,he organized and led marine geophysical work in China.
During 1964-1989,Liu Guangding worked in Ministry of Geology.In 1964-1973,he was director of Geophysics Department,Institute of Marine Geology and conducted geophysical investigation in Baohai,Yangtze River and Beibu-Guff.In 1980-1989,he was the vice director of Petroleum Geology and Marine Geology Bureau,ministry of Geology.In 1980 he was elected as member of Chinese Academy of Sciences.In 1982,he won the second class awards of National Nature Science Prize.
Prof.Liu-Guangding had been director of the Institute of Geophysics,Chinese Academy of Sciences and chief-editor of ACTA Geophysica since 1989.He made prominent contributions to the development of the Institute of Geophysics.In 1991 he was elected as a president of Chinese Committee for the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics(IUGG).In 1993,he was elected as a president of Chinese Geophysical Society,fellow of Third World Academy of Sciences.He has been awarded the Zhuo-Kezhen's Prize for the field work,the Li-Shiguang's Prize in Geology. And the First Class Awards of Science and Technology Prize of Ministry of Geology. The atlas:The Geological and Geophysical Serial Maps of China and its Adjacent Regions he edited has been awarded the second class awards of National Nature Science Prize in 1995.He is one of the chief-scientists of State Climb Project(85-34 item),and one of the members of the expert group of State 863 Project on ocean field (820 subject).
For the past forty years or so he has made important contributions to the sciences development and the build up the national economy,also trained qualified scientists of geology and geophysics.
