Abstract

Peng Shaoyi,physical chemist,born in Wuchang,Hubei Province in November,1917.
Professor Peng graduated from the Chemistry Department of Wuhan University in 1939 and studied in United States of America between 1947 and 1949.He was appointed to be a professor in Dalian University in 1949,a professor and laboratory director in Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics,Chinese academy of Sciences (CAS) in 1952,and in Shanxi Institute of Coal Chemistry,CAS,in 1961.He was director of Shanxi Institute of Coal Chemistry between 1980 and 1984,and a honorary director since 1985.He was elected an academician of CAS in 1980.
Professor Peng is one of the pioneers in the fields of catalysis and chromatography in China.
In catalysis,he and his colleagues had made great contribution in the development of highly effective process using activated carbon fiber as catalyst support and using granular activated carbon both as support and reducing agent for the removal of oxygen in gases,in aromatization of synthetic gasoline, and in platinum reform. He received the National Innovation Second and Third Awards, the CASs Nature Science Third Award.
In the field of new catalytic materials,he successfully directed research in preparation of alumina fiber, and developed two active alumina fiber-based catalysts, which were used in selective hydrogenation of dienes in cracking gasoline and catalytic combustion for far infrared drying. In coal-based synthetic fuel research,he proposed the new concept of using ultra-fine particles in catalysis to alter product distribution, which led to promising future in research and application. He was the pioneer in application of dynamic analysis to heterogeneous catalysis and in establishment of a generalized model for reaction, adsorption and diffusion.
In chromatography research,he established several quick analysis methods, and a general expression for the height of theoretical plate and a model correlating residence time and peak width at half peak height.
In recent years,he has made remarkable progress in heterogeneous catalysis involving super critical fluid.
