Zhao Yupei

Zhao Yupei, was born in 1954 in Changchun City of Jilin Province, a renowned surgery professor. Zhao finished his college education at Norman Bethune University of Medical Sciences (NBUMS) in 1982; five years later, he got a MA degree in medical science from PUMC. In 2003, Professor Zhao became vice president of PUMCH and then he took the helm as the director of the hospital in 2007. He has been the chairman of the Surgery Sector at Chinese Medical Association (CMA) since 2005; in 2010, he took the position as that association’s vice president. Zhao is also the chief editor of Chinese Journal of Surgery and Annals of Surgery (Chinese Version), and honorary and associate editor of a dozen surgery magazines.
Professor Zhao has been working in the forefront of general surgery clinic. He devotes himself to the field of pancreatic diseases, combining clinical and basic researches together, which results in systematic and innovative achievements.
Professor Zhao brought the concept of high risk population of pancreatic cancer, built the green pass for pancreatic cancer diagnosis and treatment and preoperative assessment of resectability. He created gastrostomy by intestine, which avoided various complications caused by nasogastric tube with low trauma and easy operation and improved the patient’s postoperative quality of life. He launched the clinical research of interventional chemotherapy on pancreatic cancer, which raised the survival rate one year after the surgery to 62.5%. He focused on the study of pancreatic endocrine tumor and finished the first laparoscopic resection of insulinoma in China. He’s operation on pancreatic endocrine tumor led the world in terms of the number of cases and curative effect.
Zhao Yupei vigorously advocates the building of treatment centers for pancreatic diseases and a professional pancreatic surgery team. He took the lead of formulating guidelines of the diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer at CMA and the National Standard for them at the Ministry of Health. He led 16 pancreatic surgery centers in the nation to take the responsibility of “building a comprehensive treatment system for pancreatic cancer,” according to the technology support program under the 11th Five Year Plan. They developed foresighted clinical studies on key issues in pancreatic cancer diagnosis and treatment and set up a national technology platform for the cancer’s diagnosis and treatment.
Professor Zhao Yupei has taken more than 20 scientific research tasks at both national and provincial/ministerial levels; and he has published more than 160 research and academic papers. Honors Zhao earned include the first prize of Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award, second prize of College Science and Technology Award and National Progress Award in Science and Technology.
With his devotion to the patients, Zhao wins trust and respect. He was named the Young and Middleaged Expert with Special Contribution by the Ministry of Health, Model of Medical Ethics of Beijing and Zhou Guangzhao Clinical Surgeon, etc. Zhao is also chosen to be the Director of Asian Surgery Association. Moreover, he has been granted the honorary academician of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, The College of Surgeons of HK and American College of Surgeons, to name a few.
